Radio Bahamas ZNS 1: A Clear Channel

Radio Bahamas, also known as the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (BCB), is the state-run broadcaster of The Bahamas. It was established 15 years after Broadcasting began in North America and Britain. The broadcaster was established in 1936 as ZNS ("Zephyr Nassau Sunshine,” meaning Technical Information). It remains one of the country's primary sources of news, entertainment, and cultural programming. In this Class, A Clear Channel station’s primary motivation for the service was to provide hurricane warnings for the remote island of the Bahamas. Since 1956, Radio Bahamas – ZNS 1 has operated from the third terrace, Centreville, in Nassau.

In the early days of Radio Bahamas, the station operated on medium wave frequencies and aimed to serve domestic audiences. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, Radio Bahamas underwent a significant expansion and modernization program. It included constructing a powerful shortwave transmitter on the island of New Providence.

With a power output of 50 kW, this station transmitter allowed Radio Bahamas to reach audiences throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond. The station's broadcasts known for their high-quality programming and music, including Bahamian and Caribbean music, international popular music, and BBC News.

The Inspiration 107.9 FM, the second oldest radio station in the Bahamas, began broadcasting in 1962 in the AM band at 1240 kHz with 1 kW output. At some unknown point in the 1990s, the station switched to its VHF band at 107.9 MHz.

A radio station in the Bahamas known as ZNS-3-FM (Power 104.5) started operating as an FM repeater of ZNS-3: The Light 810 kHz, which then known as the "Northern Service," before splitting and implementing its current music style. The Bahamas Broadcasting Corporation is the owner of it.

Today, Radio Bahamas operates primarily on medium wave and FM frequencies, with programming that includes news, sports, music, and cultural programming. While the station's shortwave broadcasts may be a thing of the past, the legacy of its "Golden Age" lives on, and many listeners throughout the region still remember the station's shortwave broadcasts fondly.
